UNDERSTANDING PRODUCTIVITY THE WRONG WAY
You are working in Singapore, and you must work hard.
We understand productivity commonly as:
1. WORK FAST
2. UPGRADE SKILLS BY ATTENDING SEMINARS AND ENRICHMENT COURSES
3. WORK LONGER HOURS
All this is for the purpose of obtaining High Yield for your boss.
Lets just put that aside and rewire our current thinking of productivity.
Why not HIGH YIELD for yourself? After all you are the real boss of yourself.
Let us make sense of this:
a. I will probably live up till maybe 80 years of age
b. I start work the earliest maybe at 18. (Yes army is part of work)
c. So 80-18 I have 62 years left to do something.
d. If I stop working at 60 then there is 42 years of working (that's 32.2% of your 62 years)
e. The humans rights determined since the British colony was the right to have 8 hours sleep, 8 hours work and 8 hours Rest. So I should only work 30% of my working years. That is 14 Years or working time stretched along 42 years of working life. However, you have Saturdays and Sundays for yourself so you work 71.42% of 14 Years. That's 10 Years.
If I gave up half of my rest time to work that's 4 hours, it means I work 8+4 work hour = 12 hours a day. I would have worked 1.5 times producing 15 Years of work time.
Since I am going to work 15 years, should my tour of duty be only 30 years instead of 42 so I can retire at 48? For those who are doing Army and university you need to add another 5 to 8 years on top of that. So you retire at 56. Now 56 looks like a bad deal compared to working 8 hours a day because my time is more precious than earning money. So I rather work only 10 years.
The productivity for me , is to therefore shore up as much time for myself instead of for my boss.
I should there fore:
i ) come to work on time and leave work on time
ii) absolutely not work weekends (This is how I can fly budget to anywhere and back an not spend too much)
iii) work faster not by speed but by know how (fast because you know how to do it instead of rush and doing double work)
iv) the faster I work with less double work the more time I save for myself.
In order for me to work this way I need to really know my work. I need to sleep on time so I can wake up on time. I also need to do something I like for my own time otherwise it is pointless.
In order for me to know my work, I need to be in employment continuously for 5 years in one trade without long breaks so I can gather the most experience thereby converting them to "know how" so I do things faster and right. Thereby having effortlessness. (5 years of employment = 1.66 years of working hours, that's a good bargain to ensure 10 years of smooth work!)
